sinthomosexual:

I can’t recall who said it on twitter unfortunately….but in the aftermath of all of the various state-level anti-trans bills being introduced months ago, there was a good thread going around advising and warning people that if they’re going to be really going in with trans people and helping fight for trans rights during this massive conservative cultural backlash, they’re going to have to learn to deal with being falsely accused of being a pedo or pedo supporter due to reactionary stereotypes and talking points about how we groom and threaten children. (particularly so for trans women.) And that might have some real effects on their lives even as cis allies, or otherwise people who don’t normally get painted as sex offenders inherently

And that’s absolutely true btw; no less so than literally right fucking now, when there’s so much right wing militia and police violence against trans-supportive protestors who showed up in reaction to the recent Wi Spa debacle in L.A. All of which was kicked off by a hoax / false accusation of a trans woman ‘exposing’ herself in an aroused state to girls and women in an LGBT-friendly spa, one in which nudity is not only common, but actually obligate to some degree in most areas. (also I’m sorry, but ‘she had a semi the whole time too!!’ should immediately get people to toss the entire premise of that story being even potentially true-as-stated right in the garbage.)

all I can think, especially after this year’s wave of ultra-conservative discourse around Pride, is that we’re probably increasingly on a crash course for disaster in terms of how a good amount of people in our own “communities” can be expected to deal with this, especially to protect themselves from association. particularly among certain increasingly reactionary pockets of baby gays and transes of all ages (skewing young/Gen Z, but still all ages) on social media. being able to rise to the occasion on this one and meaningfully challenge this and not just immediately sink into its logic is going to be a big problem for many of these folks.

because so many people like this have spent the past few years online and offline increasingly primed by their peers to default to using “pedo” as a go-to accusation for people who do so much as write fanfiction with an age gap between consenting adult characters, or who show up to Pride wearing an O-ring. I don’t really trust that people living in one big fantasy of constant sexual victimization by “degenerate perverts” in every ‘public’ space, online or offline, that they happen to find themselves in are going to be super trustworthy on this. and I don’t know how much I feel that these sorts are just “loud numerical minorities” and not something to worry about, especially after this past year

I feel like any nuanced understanding of the actual social danger here on the parts of so many reactionary and culturally assimilated queers is heavily compromised by a social culture where people think it’s fine and normal to sling around words like ‘pedo’ in reference to absolute non-issues based purely on their culturally unexamined homophobic, transphobic, and transmisogynistic disgust responses. and that really fucking sucks and doesn’t make me feel very hopeful about any of this, as things are surely only going to get worse and more volatile and divisive from here… “lol”

“So, when these gentlemen say, ‘You are utopians, you anarchists are dreamers, your utopia would never work,’ we must reply, ‘Yes, it’s true, anarchism is a tension, not a realization, not a concrete attempt to bring about anarchy tomorrow morning.’ But we must also be able to say but you, distinguished democratic gentlemen in government that regulate our lives, that govern us through the opinions that you form daily in your newspapers, in the universities, schools, etc., what have you gentlemen accomplished? A world worth living in? Or a world of death, a world in which life is a flat affair, devoid of any quality, without any meaning to it? A world where one reaches a certain age, is about to get one’s pension, and asks oneself, ‘But what have I done with my life? What has been the sense of living all these years?’”

genuinely the way ppl treat nudity is insane its literally just bodies

nudity is a completely normal fact of life. people have bodies and sometimes those bodies are naked. there is nothing inherently sexual about a body existing. if youre in a place thats been explicitly designated as somewhere people are naked (eg a changing room) you should probably expect that you will see naked people there. this is okay

nudity also isnt automatically dangerous or threatening to children. again they are bodies. children have these as well

The porcupine guy is a yakuza and also this is his first appearance in the show after episodes of build up of him as a villain

I recently learned that the show records first the dialogue and then animates, which is actually a pretty rare practice in anime.

The standard in Japan is animating first and then recording the dialogue, which is part of the reason of why lip sync in anime doesn’t match the dialogue as much as lip sync does in American animation. Sometimes recording is done at the storyboard or rough animation stage, but in general the voice acting isn’t something that affects how things will be animated.

Learning that made me pay more attention to the animation of the show, and while subtle, it surprises me how the difference on approach with voice acting voices actually has a tremendous impact on the animated acting in the show.

This clip is a good example of the animation functions at service of the voice acting. I think if you pay attention you can notice that, oh yeah, the animators clearly animated the acting of character based on the dialogue, not just what he’s saying but HOW he’s saying it.

It’s a very simple piece of animation, it’s nothing impressive really, and if you’re familiar with how things are animated in the American industry then it’s weird to think of it as special maybe, but paying attention to these subtle things and how the animation of the show is pretty simple but feels right, feels organicmade think of a problem in anime that I had never really thought much about before, which is the animated acting not matching how the dialogue is said.

It’s not about lip sync, forget about lip sync, I’m thinking about instances where there’s a dissonance in the emotions portrayed by the animation and the emotion of the voice. When the voice acting is really intense but the animation doesn’t reflect that, or the animation is really intense but the voice acting doesn’t have the same intensity, or maybe both are equally intense but it doesn’t quite match exactly. It’s not a thing working on one whole.

I’m not saying that all anime done with the standard method of recording dialogue is like that, sometimes it works well, but this made me realize, “oh, this is why that dissonance sometimes happens”
